Ok, A. the place (SG institute) was PACKED. There were thousands of people there, not kidding. Holy moly. Every single room on the 3 level building were full to the max and the cultural halls and the lobbies... everywhere. Tim and I finally found some chairs in a random office that we placed by the wall in one of the classes and sat down for the next 2 revelatory hours. It was a question and answer sort of deal, and oh boy were there some questions and some answers. He talked about a variety of things, I'm just going to kind of go over a few of them I liked most, but there is no way it will ever compare to the real thing so... eh.
One kid asked him something to the effect of when should you stop dating someone because they don't have these certain qualities you don't or do like. Confusing question, but the answer was simple. Elder Bednar said FORGET that dumb "shopping list" for other people, and turn it around on yourself. YOU become that person and in return you will attract people with those same qualities. Focus on becoming the person you would want to marry. Who wants someone with a checklist? Such a selfish thing. You CREATE it you don't FIND it. It's not so much about the person, the "right" one, but the one you can develop those things with, work with, overcome with, strengthen yourself in the gospel with and someone who inspires you to be better.
To be like Christ... always focus on others. Pledge to be His hands here. We have a new day, everyday, so we can help a new person. It's our purpose, my mission, a covenant. It's according to His will, not my selfish will. And if we are in communication with Him constantly He will be able to lead us to those he wants us to serve.
Don't talk AT those people who may be less intersted in the church. LISTEN to them. Understand the why's behind it. Listen to the spirit guide you.
He also gave heed, if Romney is elected Republican candidate, we better buckle up. Because things we hold close will be taken out of context and shown in a skewed way. But he reminded us to stay strong and remember that anything taken out of context can be strange. Don't let it shake us.
Learned:
- Ask questions to learn. At the temple, in the scriptures, at general conference, everything. This way we are being agents, and ACTING instead of being acted upon.
- There are different ways to teach than just lecture format
- The Holy Ghost is the best teacher, answers can be received even when no one asked them aloud
- Even though the world at this time can be scary, we know we will win. Good will prevail :)
- We have nothing to fear :)
- Be a light in the world that grows dark!
It was an AMAZING night. I loved every single second of it. In the end, he asked us if any of us had received answers to questions we hadn't asked, and no one else had asked aloud. I believe the answer for the majority of us was yes. The Holy Ghost speaks so personally and perfectly to each of our individual souls. Personal revelation is real. Impressions are felt. Heavenly Father knows what we need and what we desire. He reminded us that he has the exact same set of scriptures that the rest of us have, and that each one of the answers he gave tonight were straight from those scriptures. We can study them and be rewarded with answers anytime, anywhere. He blessed us. It was a cool feeling to have a blessing pronounced upon us by an apostle. He invoked a blessing upon us to find that light and TRUE happiness in our youth. Love the gospel!
*Random fact real quick: In January I was called to be Relief Society Secretary of my ward. Love it, so grateful for it, the Lord always knows what we need. Thankful for the challenge, the opportunity, the people I get to associate with, the spirit I get to feel, and the setting apart blessing pronounced upon my head. Still learning a lot about how things work... but it is amazing to see the system and how much each sister is cared for. Ah yeahhhh... the church is true.
